(Brussels, Belgium) – – – – On March 25, the Executive Committee of Kidney Disease:  Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) approved the establishment of a new Methods Committee.  The Committee will be chaired by Marcello Tonelli of Canada and will work towards further strengthening and updating KDIGO’s guideline development methodology.

The Methods Committee will be a small group providing oversight and guidance to future guideline work groups and evidence review teams.  It will also assist Dr. Tonelli in our effort to codify KDIGO’s processes in a Methods Manual.  It will report to the Executive Committee through its chair, who holds an ex officio Executive Committee seat.

KDIGO is seeking individuals willing to serve on this Committee.  Qualified candidates should have experience with guideline methodology, the GRADE System, and the appraisal and rating of evidence in guidelines.  The focus will be on scientific rigor and the needs of clinicians caring for kidney patients around the world.

KDIGO Co-Chair Wolfgang Winkelmayer said, “We think a global call for people interested in guideline methodology will produce an expert and experienced Methods Committee to maintain and refine further the high standards set by previous KDIGO guidelines.  We urge anyone interested in serving to contact us with a very brief description of their experience and familiarity with guidelines.”

“We are thrilled that Dr. Tonelli has agreed to continue working with us as Methods Chair and to lead this group.  His dedication and insights have already enhanced our process and this Committee will make even greater progress possible,” Dr. Winkelmayer added.

The Committee will meet once each year and have conference calls to conduct its work.  KDIGO recognizes that guidelines and guideline updates are its core business and its greatest contribution to global nephrology.  A strong scientific methodology is needed to take available evidence and translate it into recommendations that help clinicians make treatment decisions.

Those with interest in working with KDIGO on this important project should indicate that by e-mailing kdigocommunications@kdigo.org.  The deadline for submission is May 1, 2019.  KDIGO’s leadership will consider all submissions and choose five to seven experts who will be invited to join its Methods Committee.

“I hope we hear from many global guideline experts so we can include them in our search for a Methods Committee. The importance of excellence in our guidelines requires us to call out for experienced individuals around the world. We are committed to the best in guidelines which will require the highest level of advice and participation available.”

– Michel Jadoul, KDIGO Co-Chair
