Paul E. Stevens, MB, FRCP

Consultant Nephrologist & Medical Examiner, East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust. Chair, South East Clinical Senate

Paul Stevens trained in medicine at The London Hospital Medical College, completed higher medical training in the Royal Air Force and at the Charing Cross Hospital in London and was appointed as Consultant Physician and Nephrologist to the Royal Air Force in 1990. He returned to the NHS in April 1995 as Clinical Director of the Kent Kidney Care Centre, implementing a programme of modernisation and development and establishing a predominantly clinical research programme in kidney disease. He has served on a number of national and college committees, is a former President of the British Renal Society and former member of the Department of Health Renal Advisory Group. Latterly he served as his local Trust Medical Director between 2013-2020. Since October 2020 he has been Chair of the South East Clinical Senate and also Chairs the South East London Kent and Medway Trauma Network. 

His research interests have included the evaluation of kidney function, the variability of biochemical indicators of complications of kidney disease, the epidemiology of acute and chronic kidney disease (in particular the unmet need), and development of information technology based solutions for identification of kidney disease, both acute and chronic. He also has a strong interest in guideline development and has served as chair and clinical advisor to a number of the UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Clinical Guidelines and is privileged to co-chair the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) CKD guideline. He has been a member of the KDIGO executive since 2017 and is the current treasurer.
