(Brussels, Belgium) – – – – KDIGO has appointed Dr. Edgar Lerma, MD, Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Illinois, Chicago College of Medicine, as the new Knowledge Translation Lead. KDIGO’s philosophy has always been that publication of a guideline or controversies conference report is only a part of the mission. These publications must also be translated into usable aids to guide decision-making in clinical practice.
KDIGO will place a Knowledge Translation volunteer on all future guideline work groups and controversies conference steering committees. Those individuals will think about implementation throughout the development of the respective KDIGO publication. Then, when the work is published, complementary tools will be ready to distribute.
All of KDIGO’s work is intended to be usable anywhere in the world. Dr. Lerma is very aware of variations around the globe. He received his Doctor of Medicine Degree from the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery in España Manila, Philippines. He is a prolific author and editor, having published several Nephrology textbooks (Nephrology Secrets and Current Diagnosis and Treatment: Nephrology and Hypertension) and peer-reviewed articles. He serves on the Editorial Boards of high impact journals, such as Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, American Journal of Kidney Diseases and the American Journal of Nephrology. He also serves as a member of the ASN Kidney News Editorial Board. He has a prominent presence in Social Media with almost 9000 followers on Twitter and he writes for AJKD Blog.
“We are very lucky to have Edgar working with us. He will lead a team of Knowledge Translation experts who will work on the development of tools for many of our publications. Tools really make our publications come alive and enhance their usefulness to clinicians and patients.”
– Danielle Green, KDIGO Executive Director
As Knowledge Translation Lead, Dr Lerma has recently completed an important implementation tool based on the KDIGO Controversies Conference on Glomerular Diseases. This tool is a visual presentation of the conference report conclusions through more than 400 slides. This tool will be used to educate clinicians around the world and prepare them for the newly updated Glomerular Diseases Guideline, slated to publish in late 2020. These slides can also be easily incorporated into talks and presentations.
Danielle Green, Executive Director of KDIGO, said, “We are very lucky to have Edgar working with us.
