(Brussels, Belgium) – – – – Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) is launching a new initiative to reach kidney doctors around the world through remote learning. KDIGO anticipates publishing four new clinical practice guidelines and guideline updates in 2020 and needs to alert clinicians to their findings even though travel may be curtailed.
KDIGO traditionally attends and presents at regional and local congresses to directly reach its main audience, clinical nephrologists. In 2020, the means available for implementation of Guidelines and Controversies Conference Reports may be limited. Therefore, KDIGO will launch a program to electronically reach physicians in countries around the world with easily accessible web-based programs.
In 2020, KDIGO will publish de novo guidelines on Transplant Candidate Selection and the Management of Diabetes in Persons with CKD, as well as updates to its Blood Pressure and CKD and Glomerular Diseases Guidelines. It also will publish multiple reports from its Controversies Conferences. All of these publications will also have complementary implementation tools available for free and easily accessible for everyone from the KDIGO website.
“This year, in light of widespread travel restrictions, we will have less opportunity to disseminate exciting new KDIGO content through in person interactions at meetings around the globe. Therefore, KDIGO must devise new strategies and tools to reach our audience anyway. This new Remote Implementation Program was enthusiastically supported by our Executive Committee and will build on what is already available and develop new tools for the global nephrology community as new publications appear.”

Wolfgang Winkelmayer, KDIGO Co-Chair, said, “This year, in light of widespread travel restrictions, we will have less opportunity to disseminate exciting new KDIGO content through in person interactions at meetings around the globe. This new Remote Implementation Program was enthusiastically supported by our Executive Committee and will build on what is already available and develop new tools for the global nephrology community as new publications appear.”
He added, “Publication of our work is not the whole job. We must get it into the hands of clinicians who treat patients with kidney disease. In 2020, the means of doing that may not be in person interaction, but online education and electronic dissemination of information. KDIGO is moving ahead to step up to fill the void created by travel restrictions.”
Components of this program will include educational videos, webinars, podcasts, clinical decision guides, and speaker’s guides, as well as full text and summary content of KDIGO publications. KDIGO also will place content on its app and social media pages and e-mail blasts will be used to alert users of upcoming placements.
“KDIGO has always been responsive to the needs of its audience,” said Michel Jadoul, the other KDIGO Co-Chair. This strategy is timely for global nephrology and simply involves increasing our on-going efforts to communicate and educate electronically.”
“KDIGO intends to invest time and money in this expanded program of education and information. We’ve always done these types of programs. Now we have an added incentive to increase that effort at a time when it’s vitally important.”
