CKD Evaluation and Management

Important Update: While the KDIGO 2024 Clinical Practice Guideline for the Evaluation and Management of CKD remains the current global standard, a focused update to Chapter 3: Delaying CKD progression and managing its complications is currently underway to address emerging evidence on SGLT2 inhibitors, GLP-1-based therapies, and nonsteroidal mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists in people with CKD without diabetes.

The KDIGO 2024 Clinical Practice Guideline for the Evaluation and Management of Chronic Kidney Disease was published in March 2024 in Kidney International. Co-chaired by Adeera Levin, MD (Canada) and Paul Stevens, MB (United Kingdom), this update to the 2012 guideline provides actionable, evidence-based recommendations for healthcare professionals, patients, caregivers, and policymakers worldwide.

Key topics include CKD classification and risk assessment, management of complications, medication stewardship, and patient-centered care across diverse clinical settings.

Treatment approaches and actionable guideline recommendations are based on systematic reviews of the available evidence and developed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. In addition to graded recommendations, the guideline includes Practice Points for areas where systematic reviews were not conducted, practical infographics, and a dedicated research agenda to guide future advances in CKD care.
